Vintage cars and sidecars make an appearance in Chingay 2019
This year marks the Bicentennial (200th) anniversary of Singapore’s founding. In honour of that, this year’s Chingay theme, Dreams Funtasia (Bicentennial edition), will display many colourful floats and performances that will show us what Singapore can achieve and what Singapore can be in the future.
However, there is one section of the Chingay that instead, takes us down a trip through memory lane, and that is the Vespa sidecars and vintage cars parade. This section of the parade shows an array of vehicles with different colours and models. The first performance for this section will be the Vespa Sidecars parade. “We will be riding together in contingent,” Daniel Lim said, when asked what their performance was going to be about. The sidecars will be driven down the road while the drivers and passengers wave to the audiences watching.
“We are the only period car Club participating. Our pristine cars spanning the 1950’s to the 1980’s bring a historic motoring presence and nostalgia to the colourful event,” said Mr David Christie, Assistant Honorary Secretary of the Malaysia & Singapore Vintage Car Register. The cars are all about 39 – 69 years old this year, and there are 29 people participating in the parade, each of them driving different models of cars.
As for why they had such a section in this year’s Chingay, this is what one of the audiences, Eunice Seet Peng Neo, 40, had to say: “The cars brought me back to the past. It was like a trip down nostalgia lane. I am very happy that they put this act in.” Besides vintage cars and sidecars, there are other notable performances that are featured, such as the Butterfly dance, the 270m painting which features the past, present, and future of Singapore and the Harley Davidson bikes.
